Grass Lawn Park – Phase 3
Grass Lawn Park – Phase 3
City of Redmond Parks and Recreation
Grass Lawn Park is a 28.5-acre site in Redmond. The three-phase project transformed the site from a flood-prone sand field into a park with advanced drainage, state-of-the-art lighting, and proven environmental benefits that protect water quality in the Sammamish River. Phase 3 introduced low-impact construction practices to further enhance stormwater management and site drainage.
Stormwater Management
The installation of a green roof and rain garden significantly improved on-site stormwater management. The rain garden captures and filters runoff from the adjacent parking lot, protecting nearby ecosystems while supporting a healthier environment for the community to enjoy.
Low Impact Construction Techniques
The reduction of impervious surfaces was critical to the park’s success. By incorporating pervious asphalt into pathways and the basketball court, the design minimized the hardscape footprint and enhanced water infiltration. Given Grass Lawn Park’s history of flooding and erosion, materials that promoted efficient on-site drainage were a top priority. Through low-impact design strategies, the park now supports a high volume of both active and passive recreation while ensuring the site can effectively manage excess water.
Awards
Grass Lawn Park has been recognized for its innovative design and community impact in Redmond, earning the 2004 WRPA Outstanding Facility and Park Award of Merit for Phase 1 and the 2009 WRPA Spotlight Award of Merit. These honors highlight the park’s success in blending sustainable design with vibrant recreational opportunities for the community.
