Grass Lawn Park – Phase 2
Grass Lawn Park – Phase 2
Grass Lawn Park is a 28.5-acre site in Redmond that has been transformed through a three-phase project from a flood-prone sand field into a dynamic community park. The complete improvements introduced advanced drainage infrastructure, state-of-the-art lighting, and sustainable design strategies that enhance water quality in the Sammamish River. Phase 2 focused on implementing the elements outlined in the Grass Lawn Park Renovation Study (June 2001).
Schematic Design
During Phase 2, the schematic design for a new softball field was completed. The field included a perimeter fence, upgraded lighting system, and synthetic turf surface. The primary focus of this phase was developing a robust stormwater drainage system to address the site’s persistent flooding challenges. The new system collects and filters runoff, allowing it to percolate through the field areas, thereby protecting the Sammamish River ecosystem and enabling year-round field use. Additionally, the existing tennis courts were evaluated and refined to accommodate future enhancements while reducing overall construction costs.
Design Development
Phase 2 built upon the successes of Phase 1 and established the foundation for future improvements planned in Phase 3. This phase refined the concepts from the Grass Lawn Park Renovation Study through design development and detailed construction documentation, ensuring that the park’s layout, infrastructure, and amenities would meet long-term community needs and environmental goals.
Awards
Grass Lawn Park has been widely recognized for its innovative and sustainable design, as well as its positive impact on the Redmond community. The park earned the 2004 WRPA Outstanding Facility and Park Award of Merit for Phase 1 and the 2009 WRPA Spotlight Award of Merit, underscoring its success in blending sustainable design practices with engaging recreational opportunities for all users.
