Port of Tacoma Road

Port of Tacoma

As the primary entrance to the port from Interstate 5, this project entailed design that responded to the aesthetic goals of the port within its dynamic environment.  The design solution involved mass plantings of hardy plant material with seasonal color. Texture combinations were blended to provide a composition appropriate in scale for the wide roads and relative high speeds of traffic.

The port also desired new entry identification, and clear directional information was achieved with large-scale vertical elements strategically placed for recognition and readability. Cor-Ten steel, in the form of a ship’s prow, was utilized to reflect the port’s industrial character and link to shipping. Removable informational signs allow flexibility as the port and its activities evolve and change.
